Suffragettes

E. Pankhurst was from "a wealthy family" (i.e. the upper-class), but women from other backgrounds
(= other origins, other social classes) joined the WSPU.

The middle-class : la classe moyenne.

2]L. 5 : demonstration :       démonstration       manifestation       exposition

It is explained as "marching in public" and is among the "means of protest" of the WSPU.

3]L. 8 : sympathetic :       compatissant       sympathique       bienveillant

"Sympathetic MPs" = MPs who believed in their cause.

5] exiger : to demand L. 6
(When you demonstrate and protest in the streets, you don not ask politely, you demand.)
6] soutien : support L. 8
7] totalement, radicalement : drastically L. 17
8] Selon vous, qu'est-ce que le Derby (L. 16) ? C'est une course de chevaux.

The Epsom Derby is a famous and prestigious horse race. It is held once a year in the town of Epsom.
The kings and queens of England have always been keen amateurs of horse racing, and horse bree-
ders*. Their champion horses regularly compete in the Derby.
[A horse breeder : un éleveur.]

C - Compréhension des phrases complexes.

9] Quel est le sujet de were involved ? (L. 4)
"women from middle-class and working-class backgrounds were involved in the struggle."

10] Quel est le sujet de were dropped ? (L. 8)
"some attempts by sympathetic MPs to pass bills were dropped" ; after that, the tactics of the WSPU
"became more extreme
".

11] Quel est le sujet de chained ? (L. 11)
"they threw stones onto public buildings (...), [they] chained themselves to railings..."

12] Quel est le sujet de disturbed ? (L. 11)
          "...[they] disturbed public meetings"

(= "they")
"its members" (ses membres), "its tactics" (ses tactiques) y font référence.
